Our Story with David Attenborough

Real Ideas have collaborated with the award-winning production crew at Bristol-based Open Planet Studios to rework ‘Our Story’, a breathtaking Attenborough-led storytelling experience that combines gigantic animations and stunning projections, real-world footage and full 360° immersion.

Our Story is a 50-minute-long filmic piece presented by Sir David as he draws on his lifetime of exploration to tell this incredible tale of people and planet.

Do you run workshops or opportunities to create immersive content for the dome?

We regularly host creative workshops and training sessions for artists, educators, and tech enthusiasts who want to explore immersive storytelling. Keep an eye on our events page or contact us if you’re interested in getting involved.

Is there Wi-Fi available for café visitors who aren’t co-working members?

Yes, free guest Wi-Fi is available in the café area – just ask our team for the login details when you arrive.

Are Dogs allowed in Market Hall?

Yes of course! Dogs are welcome throughout Market Hall, except the Dome (however Guide Dogs and Assistance Dogs are welcome inside the Dome).

We kindly ask they remain on lead and are well-behaved.

Is there a programme or calendar for upcoming dome shows and events?

We update our programme regularly, and you can find upcoming shows on our website’s “What’s On” page or by subscribing to our newsletter. New events are usually announced a few weeks in advance.

Can I bring my own food and drinks into the Market Hall or the dome?

We ask visitors to enjoy food and drinks in the café and not inside the dome to keep the space clean and safe. Water bottles with secure lids are usually fine for shows.

Are there any discounts or special rates for families, students, or group bookings?

Yes, we often provide family tickets and reduced rates for students, schools, and community groups. If you’re planning a group visit, contact us in advance to discuss the best pricing options.

Do I need to book tickets for the dome in advance, or can I buy them on the day?

Advance booking is recommended as some shows do sell out, but if seats are available, you can purchase tickets on the day from our reception team.

Are the dome screenings suitable for very young children or people sensitive to sensory experiences?

Most dome shows are family-friendly, but some include bright flashes, loud sounds, or intense motion. We recommend checking each event description for age guidance, and if you or your child are sensitive to light or sound, let our team know when booking – we often run sensory-friendly or “relaxed” sessions with gentler sound and lighting.

What’s the story behind Market Hall?

Market Hall is a beautifully restored Grade II-listed building originally constructed in 1852 and transformed from a historic Devonport Market Hall into a cutting-edge creative hub by Real Ideas and partners starting around 2013. Today, it hosts immersive technology, cafés, co-working, events, and creative production – all within a vibrant, community-focused space.

Are there regular public shows or educational programmes?

We host a range of immersive weekend screenings – from space adventures and ocean dives to sensory experiences designed to soothe and engage visitors of all ages. Schools and community groups can also book tailored shows through Eventbrite, and many of our dome offerings align with curriculum topics like space, climate, and nature.

How do I find Market Hall, and where can I park?

You'll find us at Duke Street, Devonport, Plymouth, PL1 4PS. Nearby car parks include Mutton Cove, Granby Way, Brickfields, and limited on-street parking on Duke Street. We also have two electric vehicle charging points at the rear of the building Covered bike storage is available in the courtyard for cyclists.

Is Market Hall accessible?

Market Hall is fully accessible – with a wheelchair-friendly entrance, lift access to upper floors, accessible toilets, and an accessible bar. 2 Blue badge parking bays are available at the rear on a building and are available on a first-come first-served basis.

What’s inside the café—any dietary considerations?

Our café offers a fully vegetarian and vegan menu as well as delicious cakes and coffees, with most of the produce supplied by local suppliers such as Cakehole and Origin Coffee.

Can I hire the dome or book co-working or event space?

The dome can be booked for private events, educational groups, or creative projects – just reach out via the contact form to explore options. We also offer co-working desks, meeting rooms, and event spaces, available when you sign up for a Real Ideas membership.

What are the Market Hall’s opening hours?

The general space is open:

Monday – Friday, 08:30 – 7:00

Saturday, 09:30 – 16:00

Sunday, 09:30 – 14:00.

What is the Immersive Dome?

What makes it special? Our immersive dome is 15 meters in diameter and offers 360° projection paired with a 19.1-speaker spatial sound system – making it one of the most advanced in Europe. It immerses you in visuals and sound – whether you're watching films, music, performances, or creative shows, it feels like you're stepping into another world.
