Introduction to Linocut - 5 week course

Join us for an artistic adventure, meet like-minded creatives, and discover the joy of linocut printing.

Are you ready to dive into the fascinating world of linocut printing?

Whether you are a beginner or already on a creative journey with lino, this course will teach you to confidently design, carve and print images.

What to Expect:
This is a 5 week Thursday Evening Course which will give you time to learn the process of linocut printing week by week. We will cover every aspect of the process including, markmaking, tonal scaling, colour, registration and using a relief press. You will be learning how to design, carve and print a 4 colour reduction linocut print.

This will take place in the beautiful Ocean Studios building at RWY Plymouth where you will have access to our Print facilities.

The course will be taught by Beth Munro – Beth Munro – and Lauren Collier LAUREN COLLIER both Printmakers with lots of experience in linocut processes

All materials and Equipment are provided but if you have your own tools, please feel free to bring them with you.

The Course

Thursday 19th September – Week 1

An Introduction to RAMP, Ocean Studios and the Linocut process. We will look at materials, equipment and explore how to use linocut tools by carving sample blocks that look at markmaking using 1 colour, learning how to ink up and handle a brayer roller correctly.

You will also recieve a Suppliers/reference sheet with info on where to buy, what to read, who to look out for in the linocut community.

Your Preparation – images/design ideas

Thursday 26th September – Week 2

A recap on last week’s markmaking and any troubleshooting that has come up.

This week we will be looking at tonal contrasts through markmaking and will be working on a bigger block which you will print in one colour.

Your Preparation – to come to week 3 with a 4 colour design image ready to transfer to your lino.

Thursday 3rd October – Week 3

Recap and trouble shoot. In week 3 you will be learning how to create your own registration board, how to transfer your image onto the lino and plan a tonal colour table. We will also show you how to use our relief press safely and give you an opportunity to become confident in using it.

Thursday 10th October – Week 4

Recap and troubleshooting.

Carving and Printing your first 2 colours. Once you have successfully prepared your lino you will be ready to carve your first colour print and then carve your second colour.

Your Preparation – carve your lino ready to print your third colour.

Thursday 17th October – Week 5

Recap and Troubleshooting.

Carving and printing colours 3 and 4.

Group discussion about outcomes and what happens next.

Hopefully you will all go home having fallen in love with the process!

Time: 18:30 – 21:00 PM

Where: Relief Press Room which is upstairs in room F27/28 and Workspace 2. Someone will show you where to go on the first week, so don’t worry, you just have to get yourself to ocean Studios in Royal William Yard.

There is usually parking spaces outside of Ocean Studios, just follow the one way system, there is an hourly charge for parking.
