Whether you are a fashion or textile designer, domestic sewer or just starting out your adventure with creative machine sewing and would like to learn how to plan, create and implement any machine embroidery design your heart desire onto your work this introductory masterclass in two parts is a MUST for you. In the intimacy of Ewa Morawski studio with only one other student you will have a chance to start your creative journey into to the extraordinary world of machine embroidery.
Ewa Morawski is an internationally renowned artist and textile designer. She graduated from UAL: Chelsea College of Art with wide experience of designing, specialising in free motion machine embroidery.
In her textile design practice, Ewa experiments, applies and utilises various techniques such as: drawing, printing, collage, mixed media and assemblage.
In recent years she mastered the art of botanical printing on paper and fabric and had become a guru in this field.
In her free motion machine embroidery work she is inspired by her locality, exploring visual experiences of nature, textures, weathered surfaces, patterns and rust.
The reoccurring subjects in her artwork are trees, leaves, landscape, and life cycle.
Highlights:
Part One (Friday 10th November, 10am – 3.30pm):
In this session you will learn how to use sewing machine to draw with thread and create your own picture using various techniques.
You don’t need to be proficient in drawing. You will doodle and practise the stitches.
You will be shown how to set up the machine, how to hoop the fabric and what shapes to practise.
As the result of this session, you will be confident with handling sewing machine and creating variety of stitches.
Part Two (Friday 1st December, 10am – 3.30pm):
In this session you will extend practising shapes, patterns and stitches. With Ewa’s assistance you will plan, create and apply your own design onto the product/ artwork of you choosing, e.g., cushion cover or piece of garment.
She will also introduce you to some applique techniques and will provide some books to inspire your design.
What to bring:
– Your own machine (there is one machine available),
– Selection of light colour woven fabric (lightweight calico, cotton or polycotton),
– Scraps of fabric for applique,
– Spare needles, black and grey thread plus some colour threads of your choice,
– Small hoops (15-18cm diameter),
– Embroidery scissors and darning foot for your machine (not necessary).
