BOTANICAL PRINTING – Introductory Masterclass Workshop

Thu, 1st Jan 1970, 12:00am
Learn how to create leaf prints on paper and fabric using moist heat, mordants, and natural dyes.

Whether you are a fashion or textile designer, art practitioner or just starting out your adventure with creativity and would like to implement the beauty of nature and richness of its patterns in your practice this introductory masterclass workshop is a MUST for you.

Ewa Morawski is an internationally renowned artist and textile designer. She graduated from UAL: Chelsea College of Art with wide experience of designing, specialising in free motion machine embroidery.

In her textile design practice, Ewa experiments, applies and utilises various techniques such as: drawing, printing, collage, mixed media, and assemblage.

In recent years she mastered the art of botanical printing on paper and fabric and had become a guru in this field. She is continuously developing new samples and testing new methods, materials and processes, practically like an ‘art scientist’ in the lab.

She is inspired by her locality, exploring visual experiences of nature, textures, weathered surfaces, patterns and rust.

The reoccurring subjects in her artwork are trees, leaves, landscape, and life cycle.

Throughout this masterclass you will learn the methods of creating leaf prints on paper and fabric by using the process of moist heat with aid of mordants and natural dyes.

All materials will be provided but please bring a notebook and pen to log your print samples. If you have any specific leaves that you would like to use, you are more than welcome to bring them over.

Highlights:

Session One (Friday 8th November, 10am – 3pm):

You will learn what is botanical printing, what equipment is needed and what leaves to collect. As a practical result of this session, you will produce a series of samples on paper.

Session Two (Friday 15th November, 10am – 3pm):

You will be introduced to printing samples on fabric, both cellulose (plant) and protein (animal) based to show the difference of the quality of print in comparison with paper.

Session Three (Friday 22nd November, 10am – 3pm):

You will be working on slightly larger samples on paper and fabric with leaves you gather yourself and experimenting with materials and methods you have learnt so far. You will experiment with printing Cotinus leaves to achieve blue coloured print.
