Across Cornwall, many people face challenges that prevent them from accessing placements, opportunities and employment in the creative and cultural sector. In seeking a way to break down these ‘hidden diversity’ barriers, RIO began a conversation we called Brave Recruitment.
The name was chosen because it acknowledges both that fortune favours the Brave and that it is a Brave step to embrace the challenges of becoming a truly diverse employer. Many of the talented Brave Recruits that we are discovering experience issues such as rural isolation, socio-economic barriers, worklessness, difficulties with mental health, disability and a lack of opportunities to experiences and training within the sector.
The response so far has been a powerful testimony to just how important this enquiry is. With an excess of 25 creative organisations actively engaging with Brave Recruitment, the insights that have arisen and the opportunities that have been created are hugely exciting.

Through Brave Recruitment, we can help connect you with the right Brave Recruiter for a placement that can last anywhere from three days to six months, earning a national living wage.
Throughout the duration of your placement, you will receive regular mentoring and support to ensure the best possible fit between Recruit and Recruiter.

Our Skills Sessions give practical actions and insights around governance, HR, wider audience engagement and diversity in the workplace, while our Innovation Labs are like mini think tanks– providing a way for employers and potential employees to begin their journey together, all while solving a pressing need for the organisation.
The ultimate aim of Brave Recruitment is to connect the right Brave Recruit (employee) with the right Brave Recruiter for a part-funded placement that can last anywhere from three days to three months. Moving beyond the free internship model, these placements recognise the value of the Brave Recruit and pay a national living wage for the duration of their placement, up to 65% of which can be claimed back from Cultivator’s Brave Recruitment fund.
Throughout the duration of any placement, both the Brave Recruit and the Brave Recruiter will receive regular mentoring and support to ensure the best possible fit for both parties, and the maximum value for all.
An Innovation Lab is the first step in us working with you and your business.
Through a co-produced approach working with yourselves and potential Brave Recruits, we will design a bespoke Innovation Lab that will explore a particular area, challenge or issue that your business is facing. This will take into consideration the opportunities & limitations of your situation. The outcome will be the creation of a brief for a Brave Recruitment placement.
Innovation Labs take place at your place of work or at an alternative suitable venue.
