Garment Making For Home Educated Students:
Beginners Liberty Wrap Skirt Making Project

Course Dates for Summer Term: Every Monday morning from 6th June – 4th July
(5 x 3 hour weekly workshops)

Venue: Plymouth – Ocean Studios, The Event Space 10am – 1pm

How To Make Clothes courses are led by Jane Norris an experienced designer, pattern cutter and teacher. Each
course is designed for creative young people who are interested in a ‘making’ learning path, leading to creating their
own wardrobe of clothes. Accreditations for Bronze and Silver Arts Awards – Level 1 and 2 RQF.

This course is a great way to learn about skirt making. It’s suitable for complete beginners and novices –
suggested age range is 12 -16 years, though we have a growing group of very keen pre-teen sewing fans 10 – 11
year olds who manage the course well and like all participants complete their making project. There will be a
teaching assistant for groups of over 6 students.

Learning content:

• Learning to work with a commercially printed pattern designed for home garment making.

• Trying on the wrap skirt toiles – to visually calculate proportion of length and depth of the boarder flounce.

• Preparing the cloth, laying out the pattern and cutting out.
• Using a domestic sewing machine with precision and confidence.

• An overlocker induction to professionally finish the raw edges.
Liberty print fabric, equipment and sundries are included in the course fee – £220

Students may like to bring their own machines – to enable confidence in future making projects at home. Six places
are available for students without their own machines. Bookings close on Wednesday 1st June at midnight.
