Foundation course in Fused Glass
With Real Ideas Member, Ocean Studios resident Annette Daly
In this full day course you will have a chance to delve a bit deeper into fused glass, try more advanced techniques and make a larger piece than is possible on the shorter courses. You will learn and practise skills such as how to cut glass and be introduced to some of the techniques and effects of fusing glass as well as how to choose the best type of glass or accessory glass for different effects. You will also be able to try more advanced techniques such as kiln carving which is a great way to add texture to a piece before making a large piece (up to approximately 30cm) or several smaller pieces. These can be flat pictures which you can hang in a sunny spot or frame or they can be slumped (shaped) in the kiln into a free standing shape or dish shape. Your pieces will be a wonderful memory of your day and your new-found skills or can also make wonderful, unique presents.
You will use top quality Bullseye glass and accessory glass and Annette Daly, a professional glass maker and tutor will be on hand to give you demonstrations, advice and guidance to help bring your ideas to life in glass.
Running in the stunning Grade 1 listed Royal William Yard, this course is suitable for both beginners and those with some previous experience of glass. This course is suitable for adults and children aged 12+.It is also recommended that any 12-18 year olds who want to do this course first do at least a taster course in fused glass (either with Annette or elsewhere).
Don’t worry if you are not particularly arty, fused glass is a very forgiving medium and even people who don’t consider themselves ‘arty’ can get fantastic results on this foundation course. There will also be examples and ideas to give you inspiration and you will be given course notes so you can have a deeper understanding of the glass fusing process in case you want to take your new hobby further. Be warned, glass is very addictive!
Refreshments (tea, coffee, biscuits and cake) are provided on this course to help keep your creative juices flowing.Lunch is not included but there will be a lunch break and you are welcome to bring a packed lunch or alternatively our Ocean Studios café does delicious lunch options.
Your glass art will be kiln-fired after the course and will be available to collect from Ocean Studios a few days later or it can be posted to you (postage costs are not included in the course fee but are charged at cost).
