Embedding read and purposeful learning in new Academy

Location:

Smethwick, West Midlands

Date:

long-term consultancy contract followed by secondment

The challenge: A school becoming an independent Primary Academy was looking for the elements that set it apart. Their challenge: to embed Social Enterprise and real purpose into learning and the overall ethos of the school.

The RIO solution:We worked with the school to design and embed a challenging, real and purposeful, socially enterprising curriculum which has now been in place for one full academic year and is further developing this year.

We supported teachers to use Social Enterprise to drive learning and give pupils the opportunity to apply their thinking and learning skills to designing real enterprising outcomes to their topics. This now takes place in every year group between 3 and 4 times per year.

Continuing the development of the strand of Social Enterprise in school meant creating further methods for the school to connect with Business and Community partners in a meaningful way. The design of the VIP Membership scheme meant that partners could add to learning opportunities as well as received tangible benefits for a cost – generating a pot of unrestricted funding for the school.

  • 23 real and purposeful enterprising challenges are now embedded in the school curriculum
  • Ongoing work for nearly 2 years to date – progressing from consultancy days to a long-term secondment
  • 12 business partners engaged in school life
  • Next step is to create a whole school business and opportunities for further embedding social enterprise into curriculum
