Designing outstanding learning

crocketts community primary school

Smethwick, West Midlands

Ongoing, project started in September 2010

The challenge:

How can a ‘Good’ school make their curriculum ‘Outstanding’ through innovative approaches to learning?

The RIO solution: RIO devised a programme of support, consulting pupils and teachers, to pull the best elements from their current curriculum. We then worked with teachers to embed real and purposeful learning in their Primary Curriculum, driven by learning challenges with real outcomes.

RIO also helped Crocketts to develop interesting partnerships with local businesses to help make these outcomes more real and enterprising. This developed alongside the curriculum design to ensure maximum impact for everyone involved.

In the last few months we have been supporting Crocketts again, in partnership with another local school, Devonshire Infants and Juniors, to continue this approach in light of the significant changes to the way the curriculum is to be taught from September 2014. We are now supporting staff from across both schools to continue to use this interesting approach.

  • Exam results for students at the end of Key Stage 2 are showing improvement since new curriculum has been in place
  • Initial project has developed into a real partnership approach, working together for more than three years
  • Partnership with Devonshire Infants and Juniors in Smethwick to continue to develop the approach
  • New relationships with local community and businesses
