Thurstan Crockett Young Persons' Support Worker
Thurstan is a Young Persons’ Support Worker on the Game Changer programme in West Cornwall. He works part time, supporting young people in alternative provision academies who struggled in mainstream schools (or mainstream schools struggled with them), often due to trauma in early life – sometimes ongoing.
With a background as Head of Sustainability & Environmental Policy in Brighton – working for the UK’s first Green-led council – Thurstan is also introducing fresh practice on sustainability into Real Ideas. He has been working with staff as an external consultant to develop a Sustainability Action Plan, using the One Planet Living model, with regular blogs about each topic.
Away from Real Ideas, Thurstan is the leader of Abandofbrothers Cornwall, a branch of the national charity that supports young men aged 18-25 in crisis and involved in the criminal justice system. The organisation models healthy masculinity and runs modern rites of passage weekends and mentoring for the young men, helping them find connection, meaning and purpose as a route to turning their lives around.
Thurstan is also mad about music, and as well as working to set up a seven-week online song writing course for young people through Game Changer, he has created a music room/studio at home by the sea in Porthleven with his teenage son. They live there with his partner Thea – also a coach and retreat leader – and they love the coast path and being on, in and under the sea.
