RIO’s team of social entrepreneurs took to the water on Sunday 15 June in their Dragon Boat racing debut…and ended up claiming silverware!

In Plymouth’s first Dragon Boat race for a decade, RIO fielded a crew of 20 as part of the charity event at the Mount Batten Watersports Centre, raising funds for StLukes Hospice.

After a relatively slow start in the first race, the RIO team set the bar in the second with an impressive time of 01:02:14, qualifying for the final as second fastest of the day overall.

The four fastest boats of the day took the the water for the final, with the Cattewater Cruisers taking Gold and RIO claiming Silver.

RIO crew captain Laura Woodger said: “I’m so proud of Team RIO. Not only did we have a fantastic day as a team on the water, we raised over £500 for St Lukes and we won the Silver medal. With 16 boats competing we never expected to make the final, let alone get a medal – we’re all thrilled!”
