Swish and Stitching up Environmental Damage

By 6th February 2014 No Comments

Swish and Stitch is a Newquay-based social enterprise created by seven young entrepreneurs that aims to tackle the mass disposal of clothes that end up in landfill. Swish and Stitch will hold events in which second hand clothes can be traded and up-cycled. Through this, Swish and Stitch aims to reduce the number of clothes disposed into landfill sites and to encourage the trading and up-cycling of clothes, which will have a positive impact on the environment.

This enterprise has been created through the hard work of seven entrepreneurs that wished to create a social enterprise that would tackle an issue they wanted to address. One issue that was always a huge talking point with each member was the environment and the negative impacts to it. Swish and Stitch will hold events in which people are required to bring four pieces of clothing and one item that they wish to be up-cycled on the day. Workshops will be run to teach and encourage the use of up-cycling of clothes with a seamstress ‘Auntie Jan’. Through this Swish and Stitch aims to encourage up-cycling and the reuse of second hand clothes as opposed to the disposal of used clothes and the excessive constant production of brand new products.

James Macdonald, one of the members involved in the enterprise, said, “I am really excited to get this social enterprise up and running. It will be great to have a positive impact on the environment and the community and I really do see a successful future with this social enterprise.”

He then added, “We are all aware of the terrible impact the amount of clothing going to landfill has on our environment. Two million tonnes of clothing and textiles waste are discarded every year in the UK with only 16% reused or recycled and 1.2 million tonnes ending up in landfill. We will do our best to change this and reduce these numbers through our up-cycling and recycling social enterprise.”
