Lindsey Hall, Director of RIO, has today welcomed Nick Clegg’s announcement on new vocational support for young people aged 16 upwards but has urged the Government to place young people at the heart of the approach.
Lindsey said: “Working, as we do, with many young people who take less traditional routes into further learning, work and self-employment, it is great to see Nick Clegg recognising the difficulty many young people have in finding out what options are open to them.
“A comprehensive approach, similar to UCAS, is certainly to be welcomed, but the challenge is huge and complicated; much more complicated than helping prospective university students find the right course.
“The excellent, innovative work that is already happening, particularly at local level, between the third sector, colleges and employers needs to be at the heart of a new approach. Let’s give young people the opportunity to be champions and communicators themselves!”
RIO offers a range of routes for young people aged 16 upwards to learn skills, achieve qualifications and gain valuable work experience.
