The Real Ideas Organisation (RIO) has developed ‘Commercialisation – the way to go!’ as a bespoke training package for Cornwall Council staff members. The training is designed to encourage and accredit key members of Cornwall Council staff to develop products and services that enable positive social change at the same time as working towards the financial sustainability of the council.
The Council is required to make significant savings over the next five years, and in order to address these savings, it is necessary to explore how services can be delivered differently. In order to meet the budget projections identified by the Council, there is a focus on developing alternative or additional sources of income.
As a consequence there is a drive for employees to become more commercially aware and business focused while maintaining the balance of delivering a public sector service. The Council needs to ensure that as part of thinking commercially, it is maximising the return on investment, not just financial in terms of income, but social and environmental as well.
Cornwall Council commissioned RIO to deliver this piece of work as a result of our specialism in co-production and co-design, our first-hand experience of transforming business through social enterprise and our considerable experience as leaders in developing enterprise skills and knowledge.
The training programme will challenge learners to come up with real business ideas that add value for their customers and generate a surplus to ensure financial sustainability – working through a specially designed RIO handbook they will develop their business idea from fledgling idea through to start up business ready to pitch to senior management.
