Peer Connector Debbie

By 18th October 2016 No Comments

As part of Power to Change places, the role of peer connector was established in Devonport to help connect with the local community and begin to solve problems faced within this locality.

Debbie is a self-professed social activist, living in Devonport since November 2011. She admires, respects and supports the endeavours of people fighting to make their environments safer, healthier, wealthier and cleaner places to live. Devonport has witnessed substantial changes to its profile over recent years, particularly in terms of housing development. Debbie feels that change has not necessarily been good for Devonport, particularly for the established residents. Sometimes their voices have not been listened to and their needs left unaddressed by proving agencies, despite promises otherwise. Devonport remains a deprived area and yet there exists an enormous amount of pride, especially with reference to the historical context of the neighbourhood.

The Peer Connector role was found whilst searching the RIO website. Debbie saw the role as one which required being somewhat of local community intelligence and sign poster extraordinaire. The Peer Connector conversations not only allowed residents to voice their issues, ideas and inclinations but also, occasionally using her knowledge of services/agencies within the city, provide other information to help people connect with organisations to assist with other more personal issues.

Debbie wholeheartedly believes that a community business in Devonport can be successful; however the community engagement has to continue in order to progress and retain the relationship that she as a Peer Connector has established throughout the engagement period. The pride felt by those living in Devonport has been quite prolific throughout her conversations and it needs and deserves to be preserved.
