New Futures - Plymouth Art Weekender at Ocean Studios

In this current time of crisis and uncertainty, as part of Plymouth Art Weekender, Real Ideas will be hosting and leading a series of events with a focus on social change and a new future.  

 

We've selected a bunch of local artists to showcase a series of projects relating to this theme across both Ocean Studios and Devonport Guildhall sites. Explore exhibitions, screenings, workshops and don't forget to meet the Real Ideas Members based at Ocean Studios. If you get peckish don't forget to stop off at the cafe to refuel with coffee and treats.  

Please book a time slot to visit any Real Ideas building, your session lasts for 1 hour. 

 

You must book a ticket per building. Please make sure to maintain social distancing and follow one-way systems when visiting.

Distanced Conversations

An exhibition of work by Vanessa Allen & Nicky Harwood

A collaborative exchange via social media, phone and email, inspired by a work swap just before lockdown. Pushing and playing at the boundaries of painting and printmaking creating and showcasing a body of work that explores and re-imagines our landscapes.

Moment Specific Paintings

Moment Specific Paintings, these paintings are lit by motion sensors and are created from marks and textures in the surroundings. They work by day as a painting, encased in a frame, but once lit have different characteristics enabling the viewer to see a different image. The images feature; walls, windows, cracks and dust enabling the viewer to see beauty in an otherwise ignored image.

In Extremis, a 16m x 1m fabric wall-hanging, celebrates the genesis of the Go Large Makers' Collective, and documents their progress through lockdown towards graduation from Plymouth College of Art.
Bringing together their rich and varied skills sets, working remotely and connecting virtually from bases in Devon, Cornwall, Yorkshire, and Lincolnshire, these eight multidisciplinary artists have produced a powerful and moving palimpsest of visual narratives that reflect both personal and universal experiences. In a triumph of collaboration over adversity, they have also established a strong mutual and critical support network enabling their creative practices to thrive in a time of unprecedented existential crisis.

Seeing Sound, Robotic Pen Plotting

During PAW at Ocean Studios explore the work of Simon Russell, a local artist developing a series of imagery with a robotic printer arm. Engage with new works and see pieces develop in action over the course of the Weekender. His work is based around visualising sound but also understanding nature and trying to take new perspectives.
