Enterprise Challenge Day: The Skills Show Experience

Enterprise Challenge Day: ‘The Skills Show Experience’, Royal Cornwall Showground, 16th October 2014

Over 3500 young people attended the ‘Skills Show Experience, Cornwall’, Cornwall’s biggest ever careers event. Public opening was between 3 and 5pm on 16th October. Young jobseekers came in from all over Cornwall to attend.

We promoted the RBS Enterprise Challenge Workshop internally to attendees giving out a relevant flyer and inviting them to attend. The idea was to bring seven business owners to talk to young people about what it was really like to run your own business and start-up on your own. We secured the buy-in of seven business owners and they all turned up.

We had a good level of interest in the event and around 15 people came to watch the first speaker – Joedy Lawrence, founder of Independent Utilities. Joedy was a brilliant speaker but due to the high level of background noise, people in the audience couldn’t hear what was being said. After Joedy had finished we had to make a choice, either continue as planned in spite of the level of noise or adapt.

We decided that the noise was too much to continue which was a real disappointment, particularly because feedback from Joedy’s talk was really positive. Our alternative option was to film the speakers in a quieter location and use the videos as a resource for future Enterprise Events and as a resource for unemployed 18-24 year olds on the Talent Match Cornwall programme.

The business owners were incredibly understanding and generous. While we recorded talking heads videos individually, the others spoke to some attendees about what it was like to start-up.

The editing team managed to edit the film and create a final product ready to use in 3 working days, ready for the ‘Fantastic Futures’ enterprise day which was held at Brannel School on 22nd October. We have also just uploaded the videos to YouTube, links to the film can be found below the photographs.

Clive Oram from Clarity Legals said, “Thank you for your hospitality last Wednesday – I really appreciate the work your organisation is doing for young people and I hope the various interviews will help inspire young people to look at running a business in an informed way.”

It is a sad statistic that more than half of all new enterprises fail within 6 months and most of the remainder close within 3 years of initial start-up. There are many reasons for this of course, but by far the most common is that those budding entrepreneurs are ill informed and unequipped to deal with the many factors that running a business entails.

If you feel we can be involved in future projects then we would be delighted to hear from you.
