RIO’s restoration of Devonport Column won ‘Best Conversion/Conservation Project’ at the Abercrombie Awards 2014, announced last Friday.
The careful restoration of the Grade I listed monument, which stands proudly next to the Grade I listed Devonport Guildhall, was made possible thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and support from Plymouth City Council.
Devonport Column was also shortlisted for the ‘People of Plymouth’ award, but narrowly missed out to Plymouth University’s Drake’s Place Reservoir.
A much-loved Plymouth landmark, its restoration has seen thousands of visitors appreciate Devonport Column and the stunning aerial views it provides. After it fell into disrepair and eventually closed down completely in the late 1900s, RIO felt it was integral to the city of Plymouth that the famous landmark was once again open for residents and visitors to enjoy.
