Climb the Column for free on Social Saturday!

By 13th October 2016 No Comments

Visitors to Devonport Column this Saturday [15th October] will be able to climb to the top for FREE as part of the national ‘Social Saturday’ campaign.

Social Saturday is a national day of activity to celebrate and raise awareness of British social enterprises. Led by the national body Social Enterprise UK, the campaign encourages people to visit, buy from and connect with social enterprises in their area and understand what they can offer. Devonport Guildhall and Column along with the award-winning Column Bakehouse are all leading social enterprises, developed and run by RIO to find new uses for historic buildings whilst also creating jobs and bringing new economic activity to the area.

As part of Social Saturday, RIO is inviting visitors to Devonport Column for free. From 10am to 4pm, visitors can climb the 137 steps up the spiral staircase at the centre of the Column to the observation gallery 124ft high which offers magnificent views across the city, towards Dartmoor and out to sea. Devonport Column has WIFI internet connectivity so you can also access historical archives during your visit, as well as tweet your pics from the top!

Louise Evans, Manager of Devonport Guildhall and Column said: “As one of Plymouth’s leading social enterprises we’re delighted to support the Social Saturday campaign by opening Devonport Column for FREE to tie in with the events this weekend.”

Plymouth has a wealth of wonderful social enterprises offering a wide range of services and products to people living in the city, and when customers choose us – for a loaf of bread or as the venue for their wedding – they can be sure that any profits will be reinvested into jobs, community activity and keeping the Guildhall in good repair for future generations to use, appreciate and enjoy.

“We hope to welcome lots of people to Devonport Column for free this Social Saturday.”

Following a climb to the top visitors can relax and enjoy a well-deserved drink and bite to eat in Column Bakehouse, Plymouth’s first and only social enterprise bakery, which produces delicious, artisan breads and delicious cakes and sweet treats.
