RIO's Stepping into Shoes is a communication programme which uses the arts as a vehicle for young people to discuss and consider healthcare issues.
In 2008/9 Stepping into Shoes was commissioned by the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust.
Over four years, the programme has run nine projects each using a variety of mediums for young people to express their opinions about their experiences of the healthcare service, from sculpture to posters, research reports to films.
This year’s project focuses on three young people and their personal films exploring how they cope with long term illness and the treatment and services they receive. Stepping into Shoes provides invaluable feedback from young people on the healthcare service as they see it and feeds into other national agendas in health, education and the arts.
The project has triggered changes in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly Primary Care Trust’s service provision and has led to strategic considerations of improvements as a result.
