Get Real is a creative project where 12 schools across the Southwest are developing partnerships with schools in east and south London and embarking on a two year programme of creative and sporting activities including research, activities and events.
The project is making it possible for young people across the UK to be tangibly involved with London 2012 on their own terms, to feel much closer to the action and to understand more about the wider global and local implications of the event. Through Get Real, the young people will develop a greater awareness of other cultures; engaging with the global nature of the games and meeting and working with young people in London.
The core purpose of Get Real is to create a set of opportunities for young people across the Southwest to generate ideas, activities and events that allow them to feel that they are taking an active part in London 2012; making it real for them.
Ideas so far include mini-opening ceremonies, community games, inventing entirely new games and sharing them, creating mini-carnivals inspired by sports, as well as making films, animations, stories and performances.
Pupils, staff, governors, parents and local community members of all participating school's towns and villages will form the core audience for Get Real work, while partnership schools will be able to access and view much of the work produced through the website, including journals, animations, photographs and films.
The London partnership schools are currently being finalised, with plans to kick off in September. Watch this space!
