The challenge:

How can we support out of work young people to gain valuable skills and experience in the catering and hospitality industry and find employment in the sector?

The RIO solution: We created two six-week learning programmes, centred on catering and hospitality, to give young people a real life taste of the industry and offer a menu of skills development opportunities to help them find employment. As part of the programme the young people also had the opportunity to gain a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.

Designing menus, preparing food, meeting suppliers and working in professional kitchens were the ingredients for success, with 15 of the 17 young people on the programme going on to paid employment, work placements or volunteering positions.

  • Two six-week programmes
  • 17 young people aged 16-24 on Job Seekers Allowance
  • Experience of working with a range of local businesses from suppliers to restaurants and hotels
  • Opportunity to gain a Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate
  • Update CVs and learn interview techniques
  • 7 young people found paid employment
  • 6 young people went on to volunteering
  • 2 young people went into work placements

Sally Kittle from Jobcentre Plus:
